Oil Change Kit — 3.0L Inline-Six (BMW N51 / N52 / N54 / N55)

BMW’s 3.0L inline-six family covers a huge range of vehicles — 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1 through X6, Z4, and more — but they all share the same core oil requirement: BMW Longlife-01 or Longlife-01 FE. The distinction between the two matters if your vehicle was built after approximately 2012, and it matters even more if fuel economy is part of your concern. This kit is configured for both.

What trips people up on these engines is the BMW extended-interval system. BMW tells owners they can go 24,000 km or more between changes under the Condition Based Service (CBS) system. Many technicians — and most BMW owners who actually care about engine longevity — don’t wait that long. 12,000–15,000 km with quality oil is a more conservative and more protective interval, especially for the N54 and N55 turbocharged variants that run significant thermal and combustion load.

What’s in the kit

• Liqui Moly oil — BMW Longlife-01 / Longlife-01 FE approved (select the grade for your vehicle)
• OE-quality oil filter — cartridge kit (Mann HU816X or equivalent)
• Drain plug gasket — M12 × 1.5

Oil capacity

6.5 Liters / 6.9 Quarts (with filter). After filling, run the engine briefly, shut off, wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick. BMW inline-sixes often read slightly below the maximum mark immediately after a fill — this is normal. Top off to the upper mark before driving.

Oil grade selection

• 0W-30 — for vehicles requiring Longlife-01 FE (fuel economy variant, some post-2012 models)
• 5W-40 — for vehicles requiring Longlife-01 (most N51/N52/N54/N55 applications, pre-2012 common)

Before you order

The N54 and N55 have a turbocharger oil feed line that should be inspected for carbon deposits during an oil change.
