The 2.5L inline-five is the engine Volkswagen put in North American market Golf, Jetta, Beetle, Rabbit, Eos, and Passat for most of the 2006–2014 production run. It’s not the most exciting engine they’ve ever made, but it’s honest, reliable, and responds well to regular oil changes with the correct spec.
The correct spec is VW 502 00 / 505 00, SAE 5W-40. This engine predates GPF requirements, which means it does not need — and should not use — the newer low-SAPS oils like 504 00, 507 00, or 508 00. Using those in a 502 00 engine is unlikely to cause immediate damage, but the formulation is optimized for a different combustion and filtration environment.
The 2.5L also runs a conventional spin-on filter rather than the cartridge design used in the EA888 family — a faster, simpler service.
